![]() That’s why the setlist is what it is, that’s what I’d been obsessing about – sometimes I go in for the details to ignore the big picture. We practiced about 20/25 songs, there’s a couple we played on the night that ended up not making the record because of the sonics of them – because we didn’t play them again, like The Rain and Diary Of Always that just didn’t sound great. For me, I was just obsessing about the setlist – that’s where I was focussing my anxiety. “We tried to keep ourselves single-minded. It’s almost impossible for anything to have the same impact as it did back then in terms of the way it would slowly saturate culture, but I hope Unplugged still is that.”Īs a band, you’ve always done acoustic performances, but was there more pressure attached to this in that it was a record? You can achieve perfection quite easily these days, but what attracts me to music is the imperfections – it’s not exactly as it should be. We ended up having to play Bubbles again because of some audio thing, but for me I wanted us to capture that feeling – where if your voice breaks, if something goes wrong or you don’t play the note right, that’s it, that’s the version. Some bands go in and play a song three or four times and it can really suck the vibe out of the room. Simon Neil: “For us doing our Unplugged, our main aim was not to play the songs more than once. How important is Unplugged, do you think, in offering an experience that can really last? Historically, Unplugged doesn't just deliver stripped back songs, it's also given us lasting, career-defining live moments – the quiver of Kurt Cobain’s voice at the end of Where Did You Sleep Last Night, say. In this exclusive, unread portion of our interview, Simon Neil takes us further inside their Unplugged journey… With Biffy Clyro’s Unplugged released today (May 25) – and the performance set to premiere on MTV on the same day at 9pm in the UK, and also across the world – it marks an exciting new chapter for this heritage brand and the band, who will take their Unplugged set-up on the road in September, ![]() MTV Unplugged is a trademark of MTV Networks. In the latest issue of Music Week, we speak to Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil about how the Scottish alt-rock trio have helped resurrect MTV’s legendary Unplugged brand on UK shores.Īlbert Schilcher, VP, talent and music, MTV International has already explained to Music Week the lasting power and heritage of the brand – which over the years has offered (quiet) milestone moments for everyone from Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Jay-Z and Lauryn Hill – and outlined his hopes for the future. The closer the event took place to West Chester, the higher probability it was recorded. There are several townships that never submitted any returns to the Register of Wills Office and a large majority only submitted a few. These records do not represent all the deaths that took place in Chester County during this time period. The records in this index begin on Jand end in January 1855. This dearth of records may be an indication of a lack of compliance with the law, which may have lead to its eventual repeal. During those three years, only a few births, deaths and marriages were recorded within the county. The Registration Act of 1852 was repealed on Janu, only 3 years after its inception. The law, however well intentioned, was short lived. As stated in the preamble, the law was prompted by a need to document births, deaths and marriages that could not be substantiated for legal cases, whereby “the rights of many have been sacrificed, and great wrongs done” as well as to validate “important truths, deeply affecting the physical welfare of mankind” that could be drawn from the recording of these records. On January 12, 1852, the Pennsylvania Legislature enacted its first statewide law requiring the registration of vital records. Performers have fans’ admiration and attention, and they are the ones holding the microphone. A small action like this can help prevent moshing injuries. The singers reminded the crowd that safety came first, then resumed their set. For instance, Linkin Park once stopped mid-song to make sure a man who’d fallen in the mosh pit was helped up. As concerts and crowds become more common, it’s important that we remember to stay safe.Ĭrowd safety at concerts generally relies on security staff and crowd members themselves, but artists have the power to speak to the audience directly. ![]() ![]() Mosh pit etiquette may have faded to the backs of our minds after a year of social distancing. Due to the pandemic, it’s been a while since concertgoers have been packed together at festivals. That etiquette is especially important to promote now. Creating a fanbase that cares about its members’ safety is valuable, and it is a task left up to the artist at its center. Mosh pit etiquette is real the punk scene has been “raging” safely for decades now. ![]() It is possible to have a crazy, wild, hardcore show while fans and concertgoers treat one another with respect. We do not criticize the “raging” aspect of Scott’s concerts. If performers want their crowds to mosh, they are partially responsible for those people’s safety. Calling for fans to make the ground shake provokes a certain response. Artists are responsible for the fanbases they cultivate and the actions they encourage. Travis Scott bears full responsibility for the concert culture he has created for the past several years. In the wake of at least three legal incidents, especially ones that involved serious injury, it is easy to see Scott’s fault in last week’s Astroworld disaster. When Scott performed, he encouraged concertgoers to “rage.” While the tragedy unfolded, he called for his fans to make the “ground shake.” An enormous crowd waited for Scott to arrive on stage and surged forward as a group when the countdown clock began. Fans rushed the gates as soon as they opened that morning. Last Friday’s festival began to follow a familiar pattern. That same year, another Travis Scott fan sued for damages after a riotous crowd left him paralyzed. A similar charge followed an Arkansas concert in 2017. Scott’s set was cut short, and he later pleaded guilty to reckless conduct charges. In the process, a 15-year-old girl was trampled. However, this behavior has raised a few concerns in the past.Īt the 2015 Lollapalooza festival, Scott encouraged his fans to jump over security barricades and rush the stage. In itself, this is not a bad thing - Scott is an energetic performer who wants to put on a good show, and his fans’ excitement is a byproduct of that energy. It’s no secret that Travis Scott has a history of wild concert crowds. However, Scott needs to be held accountable for his persona, his festival’s organization and his encouragement of unsafe crowd behavior. We can contest Scott’s responsibility as a performer, considering his claim that he was unaware of the commotion in the crowd. The fact that this tragedy was an accident, though, does not mean that Scott is blameless. Much of the blame for this tragedy rests on Travis Scott.Īt its core, this was a horrific accident, unforeseen by panicked concertgoers and overwhelmed event staff. ![]() Unfortunately, assigning blame cannot bring back those who lost their lives, but accountability can help prevent similar occurrences in the future. In the wake of a mass casualty event, finding who is at fault is important. Was this tragedy a natural consequence of a concert mosh pit? Was a group of crazy fans responsible for the crush of people toward the stage? Was it a “blood sacrifice,” as many have alleged on social media? Were these deaths preventable? And if so, who failed to prevent them? The Astroworld tragedy raises questions about the nature of crowds. Many of the victims were college students, and it is easy to see ourselves in that crowd. We cannot imagine what these concertgoers and their families went through. We first want to express our shock and sympathy after this horrible tragedy. A crowd surge during Scott’s headline performance resulted in eight deaths and hundreds of injuries. 5, Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, ended in tragedy. |
